The Biddle Boys and Mrs. Soffel – Act III, Sc. 1 (excerpt) – Trio (“Escape”)
The Biddle Boys and Mrs. Soffel, a lyric opera in three acts, is a tragic love story set in Pittsburgh at the turn of the last century. In this scene, Catherine (Kate) Soffel, who is the wife of the prison warden, has convinced herself that she must set Ed and John Biddle free. Having fallen in love with Ed and feeling constrained by her life at home, she demands to run away with them. John is against this, but Ed says ‘yes.’
The singers here are Lorriana Markovic (Kate); Brent Stater (Ed) and Robert Frankenberry (John).
