Sonata No. 1 for violin & piano

Sonata No. 1 for violin and piano is in three movements.  The first movement, Allegro moderato, is in a modified sonata form with a tonal center of G.  The lively opening interplay between the two instruments is later developed into an animated fugato, before returning to the opening, with a clear ending in G major.   The second movement (entitled Aria) is a lyrical song centered in C for the violin, with a simple piano accompaniment.   The final movement provides a strong contrast to the Aria‘s simplicity.  Marked Vivace, it is a rhythmically aggressive movement in a driving 6/8 meter.  The key is primarily in a G minor mode, but the energetic coda’s final cadence brings the entire sonata to a close in the original mode of the work, G major.

Sonata No. 1 for violin and piano was composed in New York City in 1986 and is dedicated to the composer David Loeb, with whom I studied during my undergraduate years at Mannes.  It was premiered 15 March 1987 by Wharim Kim (violin) and Bo-Young Kim (piano) on a Prep Faculty Composers Concert at the Mannes College of Music in New York City. This recording is from that premiere.
