Musical Theater Songs
In the mid-1980s, I was a member of the BMI Musical Theater Workshop in New York City. Although I no longer work in that medium, much of what I had learned in terms of composing for the stage and for actors carried over into my opera composition and playwriting. Some examples of my musical theater songs may be found below.
You Are Nuts! is a silly little slice of life in New York City. Recorded in 1986 or so, I am accompanying the marvelous Anita Hollander on this one.
Before TADA! Youth Theater commissioned my children’s opera, Chloe and the Magical Christmas Forest, the company commissioned me in 1985 to write the music and lyrics for a children’s musical, Laughing’s Not Easy. This piece explored a child’s relationship with his older sister and his friends after his father, a policeman, is killed in the line of duty. I Remember is a ballad sung between the boy and his sister, while Moving On is a song of love and encouragement sung primarily by the older sister.
